Maker: Ansonia
Clock Co., New York, NY
Built: 1920's
Case: Mahogany
My first
old clock and a sentimental favorite. Neither the dial finish
nor case finish are original (the original silver on the dial
has been buffed off to reveal the brass underneath). It has
Westminster chimes ("on melodious true toned rods") and a spirit
level in the dial. A very deluxe clock for its time.

Case: Mahogany
A sister
to Sonia 1, this example has all original stuff except the glass.
Also Westminster chime. Interestingly, the movement is fairly
easy to work on, since it has a removable partial plate to allow
easy removal of the spring barrels. An even more deluxe clock,
Sonia 3 listed for $100 in the 1921 catalog compared to Sonia
1 at $85.

Maker: Ansonia
Clock Co., New York, NY
Built: Late 1920's
Case: Walnut (Detroit), Mahogany (Dayton)
These clocks
were among the last new designs of the Ansonia Clock Company.
They first appeared on the same page in the 1925-6 catalog;
Ansonia went out of business in 1929. Knowing how the production
declined in its later years, that would lead me to believe that
they are actually pretty rare clocks, although tambours in general
are plentiful. Both clocks have been recently refinished --
Detroit with an oiled walnut finish and Dayton with a gloss
mahogany.

Maker: New Haven
Clock Co., New Haven, CT
Built: circa 1930
Case: Mahogany
I rescued
this clock from oblivion on a high shelf in a store that dealt
with refinished furniture. It has a very high-quality movement
with a split back plate to allow separate access to the spring
barrels. It also features a lovely "bim-bam" chime.
